Blairsville High School

Blairsville High School is located in Burrell Township, Indiana County at the junction of Routes 22 and 119. The school is approximately 45 miles northeast of Pittsburgh and is one of two rural high schools in the Blairsville-Saltsburg School District.

BHS shares a thirty-six acre campus with Blairsville Middle School, Blairsville Elementary School and the Central Administration Office. Convenient access to Indiana University, Duquesne University, Carnegie Mellon University, Saint Vincent College and the University of Pittsburgh inspire the majority of our 430 students to pursue a four-year college preparation program while attending Blairsville High School.

Our diverse selection of core academic classes range from general to advanced placement and includes college in the classroom and dual enrollment opportunities. These offerings are complemented with a complete menu of co-curricular and extracurricular programs. In an attempt to blend these programs together, we operate a modified schedule every Friday where the staff and students engage in an assortment of clubs ranging from board games to intramural sports.

A vital component of our student services is the Academic Advisor Program. This program is designed to assist students as they transition from middle school to high school and to provide support and advocacy for students and their parents. Every staff member serves as an advisor for approximately seventeen students and they remain with the same advisor for all four years of high school.

To graduate from Blairsville High School, students must accumulate at least 23.2 credits and complete a graduation portfolio. To meet this requirement, students maintain a six credit minimum schedule each year and, via the advisor program, select work examples, i.e., entries for their graduation portfolio, that reflect their skills in teamwork, communication, research, career exploration, use of technology and analytical thinking.

Typically, approximately eighty percent of our graduates complete courses that prepare them for entry to a college/university or a business/technical school. Eight percent graduate with credits from the Indiana County Technology Center, which prepare them for employment or military service. The remaining twelve percent of our graduates are students with special needs who seek employment or additional schooling upon graduation.

Blairsville High School is a technologically advanced school with three computer labs, a portable wireless lab, a computer assisted drafting and design lab, a computer assisted mathematics lab, and a local area network with independent servers and Internet access on all computers. There is at least one computer, telephone, television and public address system in every classroom. Teachers are encouraged to infuse technology into their teaching techniques and many utilize LCD projectors, big screen televisions, smart board technology and Internet sites as instructional tools.
